In 1813, these silver dollars were transformed into Australia’s first distinctive coins — the famous Holey Dollar and Dump — providing a much-needed solution to the colony’s shortage of circulating currency.

This special 2026 $1 commemorative coin reproduces the remarkable 1813 Holey Dollar held in the National Coin Collection, which can be traced back to an original Spanish silver dollar minted in Mexico in 1804.
