One of the most distinctive coins of Australia's pre-decimal era, this 1934–35 Centenary Florin was struck at the Melbourne Mint to commemorate two important milestones:
100 years since the establishment of Victoria in 1834.
and
100 years since the foundation of Melbourne in 1835.
But behind its striking horse-and-rider design is an even better story.
The coin was supposed to help finance Melbourne's centenary celebrations.
Instead, Australians largely refused to buy it.
Thousands were eventually melted.
And in an extraordinary attempt to save the issue, a Melbourne department store bought 30,000 coins and began handing them out as ordinary change to its customers.

Understanding verification on our products
Spencer Bullion Exchange complies with Australian Government anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) legislation. As part of these obligations, we are required to verify the identity of customers for certain transactions.
Identity verification is typically required for purchases exceeding $10,000 AUD, as well as in circumstances where transaction activity requires further due diligence. This process helps us detect and prevent fraud, money laundering, and other unlawful activity.
Customers may be asked to provide valid identification documents, such as a driver’s licence or passport, along with additional information where necessary. All information collected is handled securely and in accordance with Australian privacy laws.
We aim to keep the verification process as simple and efficient as possible while maintaining strict compliance standards. Most checks are completed promptly, allowing transactions to proceed with minimal delay.
