At first glance, it is a classic Australian sovereign: King George V on one side, St George and the Dragon on the other.

But the date 1915 tells a much bigger story.

When this sovereign was struck, Australia had been at war for less than a year.

Australian troops had already departed for overseas service, and on 25 April 1915, Australian and New Zealand forces landed at Gallipoli.

The events of that year would become permanently embedded in Australia's national story.
