A classic piece of Australian gold history, this 1913-P Gold Sovereign was struck at the Perth Mint in Western Australia during the reign of King George V.
While today we regard the sovereign as one of the world's great collectable gold coins, in 1913 this was very much real money.
And the story of this particular sovereign begins with gold.
From Western Australian Gold to Imperial Currency
The Perth Mint had opened in 1899, established as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint largely to transform the enormous quantities of gold being produced from the Western Australian goldfields into sovereigns.
Instead of transporting unrefined gold thousands of kilometres overseas for processing, Western Australia's gold could be refined and struck into official British currency in Perth.
By the time this sovereign was produced in 1913, the Perth Mint had become an important part of Australia's gold economy.
The tiny “P” mintmark found on the reverse of this coin tells that story.
It identifies the sovereign as having been struck in Perth — quite possibly from gold originally mined from the Western Australian goldfields.
