A magnificent piece of American monetary history, this 1904 $20 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the final years of one of America's longest-running and most important gold coin series.
Containing almost a full troy ounce of pure gold, the Double Eagle was the largest regular-circulation gold denomination of its era.
But the story behind the 1904 Double Eagle is much bigger than its $20 face value.
America's Great Gold Coin
The $20 Double Eagle was born from one of the defining events in American history — the California Gold Rush.
The enormous quantities of gold flowing from California created the need for a larger denomination than the existing $10 Eagle, and the $20 Double Eagle emerged as a practical way of converting America's newfound gold wealth into money.
The Liberty Head design would remain on the denomination from 1850 until 1907.
By the time this particular coin was struck in 1904, the Double Eagle had become one of the great workhorses of America's gold-based financial system.
